Key Stage 1

Welcome to KS1

In KS1, we have 3 mixed Year 1 and 2 classes, with extra support for Year 1 in the morning.  Our staff are:

Team Genet – Mr Baker supported by Mrs Smith and Mr Wescott

Team Civet – Mrs Taylor supported by Miss Beukes

Team Tiger – Miss Dodd supported by Miss Roberts

Mrs Blockley also teaches Maths and English to Y1 in the mornings.

We are also supported by Miss Lincoln and Miss Bates (HLTAs)

Children will bring spellings home each Monday.  They should try to learn them using the “Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check” method.  There is space on the back for practicing in writing the new vocabulary in sentences.

We encourage children to read as much as possible at home.  Little and often is best.  We also encourage children to re-read books once finished to aid in developing fluency.  You can support your child by discussing what they have read, making predictions and using inference.

We have sent home orange books with response to reading activities.  These can be completed after finishing a book.  They don’t have to be done after every book –  every few books is fine.  Please note children will not be moved up through book bands until they can demonstrate a secure understanding of texts read independently.

Start/End of the day

Doors open at 8:50.  Children can come straight in to class to get on with morning activities.  Please encourage your child to be independent once they have got to grips with the routine – the corridor gets very busy!  The school day finishes at 3:25 for KS1.  Children can be collected from the playground doors.

The Tuck Shop runs at break times on Mon, Wed and Thurs.  No more than 30p a day will be needed.  Money will be collected in by teachers in the morning and kept safe until needed.

KS1 News

Monday 27th November

This week KS1 will be learning about fractions in Maths.  We will be finding halves and quarters of shapes and numbers and will be looking at doubling and halving.  In English, we will be continuing our work on The Twits by writing letters to the characters and writing a police report.  In the afternoons we will be practicing for the Christmas play around other lessons.  A massive thanks to everyone that has already sent in a costume.

Monday 20th November

This week in maths we will be learning about the properties of 2d and 3d shapes.  We will learn about corners, sides and symmetry for 2d shapes and vertices, faces, edges for 3d shapes.  This will lead to work on sorting, classifying and reasoning about shape.

In English we will be continuing our work on The Twits.  We will be writing letters and instructions.

In the afternoons, we will be working on anti bullying week and rehearsing for our Christmas Play.  We will be sending slips home to let you know what your child will be doing in the play.  If you can help us out with costumes, we would be grateful!
