Western Primary is committed to its moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of our children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We are alert to signs of abuse and neglect, and we follow our procedures and policies to ensure that our children receive effective support and protection.
We keep children safe by:
  • Having an up to date Safeguarding and Child Protection policy.
  • Having an up to date Low Level Concerns policy.
  • Having an up to date E-Safety policy.
  • Having a Designated Safeguarding Lead (Mrs Katy Baker), two Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (Mrs Ellie Dean and Mrs Donna Newton) and one identified Safeguarding Governor (Mr Dan Forrester), as well as having a Level 2 Safeguarding trained Home School Liaison Officer.
  • Completing the safer recruitment and checking procedures necessary to ensure all staff have the suitability to work with children and young people.
  • Having an open-door policy where concerns can be shared in confidence.
  • Having a safeguarding culture that is embedded through ongoing CPD ensuring all our staff have up to date safeguarding and child protection training.
  • Sharing information with appropriate agencies if we have concerns. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with parents and carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.
  • We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.

Photography and Video

Whilst lots of parents and carers really enjoy seeing photos and videos of their children’s school life, we are very mindful of our duty of care towards all our pupils. We take the issue of safeguarding very seriously and this includes the use of photographic and video images.
Any photographs or videos taken by parents, carers and relatives at school productions, sports days or other events are for the enjoyment of individual families. They must not be used in any way that could potentially place a child at risk. This would include publishing images in any form of print, or on the internet, including social networking sites. This is emphasised before concerts and shows etc.
We understand that, in exceptional circumstances, a parent or carer may not wish their child to be photographed or videoed in this way. If this is the case we will ensure that these children are not in any photographs or videos taken within school.
Occasionally, the local press will be invited to take photographs of school events and special achievements. We also like to use photographs of our children on our website and on Class Dojo. Permission to share images of your child in this way will be sought on entry to the school, via the contact form issued. You are within your rights to withdraw your consent for any of these, at any time.

What to do if you have a concern about a child or young person

IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OR WELLBEING OF ANY CHILD, YOU SHOULD ACT WITHOUT DELAY.
If you have a concern about a child or young person, you can contact:
  • Our Safeguarding Team.
  • The Children’s Safeguarding Team on 01472 326292 option 2
  • Report a concern online via North East Lincolnshire’s Safeguarding Children website here: https://www.safernel.co.uk/report-a-concern/.
  • Contact the police on 101, or 999 if in an emergency
You should report any concerns, however small they may seem, as soon as you possibly can.
Everyone has a responsibility to keep children safe from harm. Many people worry that their concerns or suspicions may be wrong, that they are interfering unnecessarily, or that someone else might report it. Our advice would be to report in any case to the school or to the Children’s Safeguarding Team, where advice can be given and the professionals can process the information you have.

Online Safety

In simple terms, online safety refers to the act of staying safe online. It is also commonly known as internet safety, e-safety and cyber safety. It encompasses all technological devices which have access to the internet from PCs and laptops to smartphones and tablets.

Being safe online means individuals are protecting themselves and others from online harms and risks which may jeopardise their personal information, lead to unsafe communications or even effect their mental health and wellbeing.

In an ever-changing world, being online is an integral part of children and young people’s lives. The internet and online technology provides new opportunities for young people’s learning and growth, but it can also expose them to new types of risks. Therefore ensuring children’s safety on safety online has never been more important.

E-Safety is an important part of keeping children safe at Western Primary School . We have extensive security measures in place in school, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. E-Safety is taught to all pupils explaining and demonstrating how to stay safe and behave appropriately online. It is constantly re-enforced throughout all aspects of school life.

We can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with parents to ensure the E-Safety message is consistent. It is important that parents speak to their children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online and help prevent children accessing inappropriate material at home by way of filters and parental controls.
